What started out as a week-long respite at Camp Sunshine after our oldest daughter was diagnosed with cancer at age 2 1/2 has turned into a very big part of my family's life. After that first trip to Camp Sunshine we have returned every year for the past 14 years as volunteers. Having experienced first-hand the impact of a life-threatening illness and the support we received at Camp Sunshine, we have become involved in fundraising so that other families can experience this unique retreat.
Camp Sunshine is a family retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families to relax and be around other families going through similar challenges. At Camp Sunshine each session focuses on a different illness - childhood cancer, organ transplants, lupus, rare blood disorders, and bereavement. Programs include housing, meals, on-site medical and psychosocial support, as well as many activities for children and adults. One week-long session at Camp Sunshine costs $2000 and is completely free to the families.
Charity Navigator, the nation's leading charity evaluator, has awarded Camp Sunshine its top rating for the 5th year in a row for sound fiscal management, placing Camp Sunshine in the top 3% of rated non-profits nationwide.
